it should be as soft as possible. Cotton will wrinkle, but it is more breathable. A nice choice is a 60% Cotton, 40% polyester blend. A blend will remain comfortable yet offers easy care. And wrinkled sheets are neither attractive nor comfortable, no matter how much cotton is in them!
When discussing thread counts it gets even more confusing. Most manufacturing of sheets has gone overseas, and there are no true standards. There are 500 thread count sheets that feel like sand paper and 200 thread count sheets that are silky to the hand. It used to be, not too long ago, where the tighter the weave, thus the higher thread count per square inch, the softer the sheet. Now it really depends on how and where the sheets were constructed. The best way to find out how a sheet feels is to feel it yourself.
